You’re not different because you don’t know this.
And you need to know this.
A few years ago, people made money from the internet.
Today, people still make money from the internet. But not enough people make the amount of money they’d like to make. After careful thought and analysis, there is something that people often overlook.
Their personality.
They copy blindly because it worked for someone else.
Copying damages your creativity. Copying might not be visible to the people that see your work, but you know internally that you copied it.
Your creativity is trained on copying the exact models of things people have done.
It’s no doubt that you’d try to act like your favorite creator or influencer. This is where blending in happens.
You get so caught up in wanting what they have that you don’t think about what you want. You’re mindlessly implementing. There’s nothing with wrong about trying to grow or get what they got but it might not work for you.
It is the same thing when it comes to personalities.
Brand personalities attribute human personalities to businesses and create a sense of familiarity and connection to their audience.
In the creator economy, more personal brands are increasing each day. But that doesn’t mean that most people will suffice to the top or even the middle.
The thing about starting out in the creator economy is that you think you need to be like person X (your influencers) and think it will give you a head start in the economy.
You think copying the personality of an accepted figure will gear you towards the top and attract people that admire them to you.
All true, and if the persons that influence you have a huge following distributed across social media platforms, then the reality is they’ve probably got other people like you who admire them doing the same things you’re doing.
Sharing the same pieces of content (if not, related) and expressing the same personality (that of the influencer).
It creates a web of one person.
That doesn’t really help anyone.
I used to believe minimalist designs were everything.
If a design wasn’t minimal, it just wasn’t good enough. This is still the thinking of most people.
I’d been a minimalist and loved to be identified as one when it comes to design but then it snapped me. I was just being lazy. Not putting elements on the screen with the phrase “less is more” in my mind more than any other.
That’s how I slowly started doing mediocre work. It was general and anyone could replicate.
Got influenced by the minimalism of Dan Koe’s designs and dived headfirst into it without consideration. Just copied a design style and doubled down on it.
Everything I did concerning design seemed to not be as fun and engaging as it was at the beginning.
Why?
It wasn’t me.
I was copying someone else without thinking about it.
Now, I get people telling me, “They know a design I did when they see it.”
This is the power of personalization.
Having attributes of the top creators are a plus, but don’t make it something you rely on to attract people.
You need your own style. You need to explore it till it becomes boring.
I found a style and I’ve owned that style.
Content creation is easy and not at all stressful simple because I’ve found what works for me.
Why people buy.
A study found that 57.5% of customers buy from brands with strong personalities, whilst 51.2% of people have purchased from a brand because of the way they spoke online.
You’ve seen this in action. You’ve experienced this too.
You’ve seen personalities get you so intrigued to know more you can’t stop scrolling.
In the creator economy, this important statistic seems to have been forgotten. Very few leverage the power of personalization.
To take it from the top,
A brand personality simply are the attributes of humans given to brands. In this case, the personality.
A brand personality tells if you’re a ruler or a caregiver. It is expressed through the way a brand communicates its messaging.
These personalities are created using brand archetypes. Some cause your heart to beat faster.
How did it feel when you first met your favorite creator online?
When you came across their content that gave you an insight into something you weren’t aware of or were fascinated about and they just communicated it so effortlessly.
The personality blending with the message accounts for why you have a favorite creator.
This is why Dan Koe is not Iman Gadzhi.
These are two different personalities. They have similar beliefs, but the message they preach are completely different.
This is the power of personality. It sets you apart from the rest.
When you first came across your now favorite creator, they said something that stuck with you. It made you check their profile. It made you follow them. It even made you to binge watch or consume content.
This is what personality does. It makes you memorable. It only works when you embrace it as who you are and not give a fuck what people think.
Iman Gadzhi started documenting his journey since he was 16 till this date he is still publishing videos on his YouTube channel. He grew into his personality and became the person that he is today.
Dan Koe embraced his personality and started building. People love him for it.
It is needless to say that personality is f*cking important and you need to prioritize it.
Because when you do, you get connect with real people.
Your personality attracts people. Real people. Not bots.
If you’re a creator, find your style. Stick to it.
My next story will be about how to find your personality. Give me a follow and stay tuned for it.
